We finish up the first season of Find That Film with the Western 3:10 to Yuma. We’re covering the 2007 remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford movie (you should watch this too). James Mangold directs Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in this tale of bad man vs good man.
In this modern Western we get to see a barn burn, a stagecoach robbery, a gutsy negotiation, and lots of gun play. There are bullets, fires, and explosions woven throughout the high drama and whispered dreams and confessions. Bale portrays Dan, a disabled vet with a sick kid and a dying ranch. He’s frustrated, hopeless, and desperate. Crowe plays the big bad Ben Wade, an outlaw of great renown and troublesome gang. This is the story of how Dan helps bring Ben into custody. A lot of people die. Dozens.
While the two leads are fantastic, this film works because of the supporting characters. Ben Foster terrifies as the devoted Charlie Prince. Alan Tudyk‘s Doc Potter inspires the posse. Gretchen Mol nails the worried and worn supportive wife. Peter Fonda, Logan Lerman, Dallas Roberts, and Luce Rains round out the excellent cast.
Even if you don’t generally enjoy Westerns give 3:10 to Yuma a chance. Find that film.
